DESCRIPTION:In this course\, we will explore the roots of textile crafts in
  Northern Europe by using ancient tools to work with wool from heritage sh
 eep. Much of the course will focus on learning historical techniques for p
 rocessing wool and spinning yarn with unusual tools. Students will have th
 e opportunity to try wool combs reproduced from an archaeological find\, a
 nd they will use a niks\, a simple tool from Estonia\, to wind weaving thr
 ead. Throughout the course\, we will process and spin wool from double-coa
 ted sheep from the Northern European short-tailed sheep family. Skill/expe
 rience note: Students should be able to spin a continuous woolen thread us
 ing any spinning tool (or without tools). Physical ability note: The use o
 f spinning and wool processing tools requires fine motor skills and the ab
 ility to do repetitive hand movements. Some tools have sharp points. When 
 working with raw wool and sharp tools\, it is always recommended to be up 
 to date on vaccination for tetanus. Required Tools A bag to bring home woo
 l samples Optional Tools Apron Gloves Notebook and pen All necessary mater
 ials and tools will be provided\, but students are welcome to bring wool c
 ombs\, spindles\, or other tools that fit the theme of the class. Session 
 Information This course is part of the Winterers’ Gathering and Arctic Fil
 m Festival 2026. The fun begins on Friday morning\, with films\, speakers\
 , and community gatherings planned all day Nov 20-21-22. Full schedule ava
