SUMMARY:Black Ash Handbag Basket
URL:https://feralskills.com/events/black-ash-handbag-basket-2026-10-06
STATUS:CONFIRMED
DESCRIPTION:Black ash\, also known as “Baapaagimaak” to the Ojibwe people a
round the shores of Lake Superior\, is a native tree that provides beautif
ul\, natural weaving material upon harvest and process of log to splint. F
lexible to work with\, black ash splint lends itself to a variety of baske
t shapes and sizes suitable for both fancy and utilitarian use\, providing
highly functional baskets for everyday needs. The course will start with
an in-depth discussion of the harvesting process\, including log pounding
and material storage\, splitting of splint (via hands and splitting brake)
\, scraping of splint with knife and cloth\, and cutting of splint with sc
issors and slitting gauges. Using scissors or slitting gauge and knife\, p
articipants will then cut their pre-harvested and pre-shrunk\, choice ash
splint (provided by the instructor) into the working base\, upright\, weav
ers\, handles\, lashing\, and rim pieces. The base will be an optional pla
in weave or twill weave while the height of this basket is woven one round
at a time\, allowing creative play with weaver widths. The finished baske
t will measure approximately 11”x5"x7”\, bringing the total height to abou
t 11” at the top of the handles. Use of a few decorative rows of natural p
lant dyed splint is optional. Time permitting\, participants will be able
to make their own basswood cordage for filler in the rim system. With time
and use\, this basket will develop a beautiful patina. Hand strength is r
equired for this kind of basket work. Students should feel comfortable usi
ng a knife. Ages 18+ may register for this class independently. Youth ages
10+ may register if accompanied by an adult. Adult/child pairs will compl
ete one project and pay one materials fee. A 25% tuition discount applies
to the youth registrant when registering with a full paying adult\; call t
