 09-30
STATUS:CONFIRMED
DESCRIPTION:Dating back to the early Iron Age\, card-woven bands were used
for several purposes: to create the starting and selvedge bands for warp-w
eighted looms\, to become the edge of handwoven blankets\, and to decorate
the hems and seams of garments. Modern uses may include purse straps\, gu
itar straps\, hat bands\, and belts. In this class\, we will create bands
approximately 3/8" to 3/4” wide and 24” to 48” long. As time allows\, stud
ents can create a second beginner band or try a more complex pattern based
on Birka 6\, an archeological textile discovered in a Viking burial site
in Birka\, Sweden. Students will have a variety of beginner-friendly patte
rns to choose from. By the end of class\, students will have the understan
ding\, skills\, and resources to continue band weaving at home. A material
s fee of $25-$35 will be collected in class. This class will require the u
se of fine motor skills\, and students should be comfortable sitting for l
ong periods. This course is open to students ages 16+. Youth ages 12+ are
welcome to register with an adult. Adult/child pairs will complete two pro
jects and pay two materials fees. A 25% tuition discount applies to the yo
uth registrant when registering with a full-paying adult\; call to registe
 r.
