DESCRIPTION:Discover the rich global tradition of tension-based weaving in 
 this hands-on class where students will craft and use their own looms. The
 se looms consist of simple\, portable equipment that allows weavers to anc
 hor one end of the loom to a stationary object and the other around their 
 waist. The concept of tensioned\, body-anchored weaving emerged independen
 tly in cultures around the globe\, from backstrap looms used to create the
  intricate textiles of the Maya and Andean peoples and the vibrant woven b
 ands of Southeast Asia\, to the narrow-band techniques of indigenous group
 s across Scandinavia\, Russia\, Siberia\, and the Baltic region. In this c
 lass\, we’ll begin by carving our own loom parts from wood\, working prima
 rily with the drawknife. Then\, with our custom looms anchored around our 
 bodies\, we’ll explore traditional weaving techniques to create colorful\,
  patterned bands. No prior experience is necessary—just curiosity\, creati
 vity\, and a willingness to learn by doing. Students ages 16+ may register
  for this course independently. Youth ages 14+ may register if accompanied
  by an adult. Adult/child pairs will complete two projects and pay two mat
 erials fees. A 25% tuition discount applies to the youth registrant when r
 egistering with a full-paying adult\; call to register. Physical Ability/S
 kills Needed: Hand strength is needed for wood carving. An example of hand
  strength is opening a jar. Required Tools All tools will be provided. Opt
 ional Tools Draw knife\, slojd knife. These tools will be provided by the 
 school\, but you are welcome to bring your own. Session Information This c
 ourse is part of Fiber Week 2027. Plan to stay a day longer for Fiber Frid
 ay on Friday\, February 12\, which features demonstrations\, speakers\, an
 d community gatherings offered as a benefit to students enrolled in Fiber
