DESCRIPTION:North House Folk School is honored to welcome Japanese woodturn
 er and artist Eiko Tanaka. In this first-of-its-kind at North House offeri
 ng\, Eiko will guide students through the process of turning small end gra
 in bowls using the unique Japanese turning methods and tools. Japanese woo
 dturning is distinct from western-style turning in several ways. Instead o
 f gouges\, it uses hooks and hand-held scrapers\, supported by a movable t
 ool rest on a table. The class will begin with a presentation on Japanese 
 woodturning to give students the context needed for turning. Then\, studen
 ts will make small handheld scrapers for use in the finishing process. The
  rest of the time in class will be spent immersed in the process of turnin
 g small end grain bowls with hook tools on modified western lathes. Eiko w
 ill share different techniques for using and maintaining a variety of hook
 s\, tools\, and scrapers. As a special feature of this experience\, Eiko w
 ill guide students in the application and proper curing of urushi lacquer\
 , which they will apply to figured horse chestnut bowls she will provide. 
 This class is a once-in-a-lifetime experience for anyone interested in Jap
 anese-style woodturning. Note\, beginning turners are welcome\, but this i
 s not the best fit for first-time students of woodturning. Students should
  expect to spend extended periods of time standing. Eiko’s visit is part o
 f Unplugged 2026. Eiko will give a free demonstration and a presentation o
