COURSE DESCRIPTION Mother Nature can be unforgiving. Having the skills to combat Mother Nature is key to your survival. Developed for the avid outdoorsmen, the Basic Survival Course will teach individuals valuable concepts and skills that can be applied when faced with an outdoor emergency. Anything can happen, from an unexpected storm to getting lost; to an unexpected injury. Students will learn how to stay alive in a short-term survival situation. The Basic Survival Course will not only educate students with hands-on skills but provide them with an understanding of the physical and psychological demands endured by the body during a life-threatening event.

FIELD AND CLASSWORK Survival Priorities Survival Equipment/Gear Understanding Your Survival Needs Physiological Demands During a Survival Situation Knife Use and Safety  Fire Development - Components, Application, and Creation  Shelter Setup and Theory Navigation Skills Water Treatment  Rescue Techniques  REQUIRED KIT Fixed blade knife  Ferrocerium rod  Bic lighter Signal flag  Suunto MCB Compass  UCO Storm Proof Matches  UCO Storm Proof Sweetfire  1 Roll of Gorilla Brand 1" Duct Tape Single wall stainless steel water bottle  100’ Paracord  T6Zero shelter 6 tent pegs  Sleeping bag or wool blanket Headlamp with spare batteries Notepad and pencil/pen Backpack to fit above items  ADDITIONAL INFORMATION LEVEL OF PHYSICALITY: 7 out of 10 Students will undergo food deprivation during this course. 

The course is fast-paced and will require a medium level of physical fitness. Students will walk throughout the school property throughout the entire training course.  

The primary focus of this course is to learn how to maintain yourself during a short-term emergency scenario.
