Woodcarving for Families: Magic Wands and Dragonflies

Class

Carving wood is an immensely satisfying and endlessly creative activity for kids and grown-ups alike. Who doesn’t want to whittle a stick now and then? With a few important techniques and skills, it can be a safe(r) pursuit too. In this family workshop, students will learn to safely use a Swedish carving knife, adults will learn to carve themselves and importantly how to supervise their young carvers at home. We will start the morning by making magic wands and work through the afternoon on making our dragonflies. Class will all work together learning to safely use many fun tools including a vegetable peeler, shaving horse, draw knife, spokeshave, and, of course, carving knives! Students will learn to notice wood grain direction and why it matters, and will practice basic knife carving moves. We will have themed snacks and take many fun breaks throughout the day. This class is definitely going to be a great time! No carving experience is needed for this class and many learning styles can be accommodated.
