This course provides a comprehensive introduction to the fundamentals of land navigation. Students will learn how to confidently use a compass, understand its anatomy, and apply essential techniques such as pace counting and distance measurement. The class covers orienteering without a map, reading different types of maps, and interpreting marginal data.
Key skills include adjusting for declination, terrain association, and working with the Military Grid Reference System (MGRS) to accurately locate points on a map. Students will also learn how to match the map and compass, utilize navigation tools, plan routes effectively, and maintain travel logs to “stay found” in the field.
By the end of the course, participants will have the foundational skills needed to navigate in a variety of environments with confidence and accuracy.
